Referendum Advertising Activities

The Chief Electoral Officer has regulatory responsibility for the administration of the referendum to ensure the process is fair, transparent and accessible to all Ontarians who want to participate in the referendum debate.

If you plan to spend $500 or more on Referendum Advertising to promote a particular result during the referendum period it is important that you fully understand the registration and reporting requirements for Referendum Campaign Organizers.

To help Referendum Campaign Organizers understand their responsibilities, the Chief Electoral Officer has developed guidelines. These guidelines are made under the authority of the Electoral System Referendum Act, 2007 and are organized as follows:

  • R01 Application for Registration of RCO
  • R02 Change in Registration Information
  • R03 Use of a Registered Referendum Campaign Organizer's Own Funds
  • R04 Rules on Contributions
  • R05 Referendum Advertising
  • R06 Referendum Period Advertising Report

We have also included FAQs on this site to help answer any questions you may have. You will also find a Registration form for downloading.
